SSFHS Sports Broadcasting Program

SSFHS Sports Broadcasting Program

The Sports broadcast program at South San Francisco High School is a part of the Video Art Class which is a career technical education or CTE program. we produced over 40 live sports events a years which is broadcast on the NFHS network and available to watch afterwards on our YouTube page. Students are trained in all the aspects of live video production in a real-world setting which produces a professional event that benefits not only students, but promotes school athletics and positively represents our school in the community. My name is Antonio Franco. I’m the technical director here at South City. During the football games, I’m technical directing and communicating with the camera people to frame up certain shots for certain parts of the game. Also I’m communicating with the graphics people. We use the Tricaster Mini, which is a video production switcher. [so] We can switch from camera to camera, we could balance audio with it. We can input graphics onto the videos This program has taught me a lot of communication skills [that] taught me what it’s like to be in a leadership role. I enjoy shooting the live broadcasts because it helps me to learn to cope with tense situations and having it perfect the first time. My name is Victoria and I was one of the camera people during our broadcasts. During the games I was getting close-ups of the players after they scored a basket. We were communicating with the technical director, and he was telling all of the cameras people you know what shots to get. Shooting a live broadcast [is] really fun because during the broadcast you communicate with your other cameraman and you just feel the excitement going on in the game. So one of my jobs was sideline camera where I filmed the basketball players from the sidelines. And it was [really] a great experience Since it is a live broadcast, You have to be on-point based on what the directors telling you where to go and where to film. It was a little bit challenging trying to every to get on [what’s] [on] the same page, but it was fun working with people. What I like about the program was that it [can] [help] me [got] [me] out of my house because [I’m] always in the house doing nothing majority of the time [I’m] and and I like working with people around me. It was fun. Hi, my name is Kat and I’m one of the commentators for the live sports broadcasts. This program is unique because It’s one of the very few in this area and not only that but, a lot of the students run it. And Mr. Boyd is in charges of the whole thing and is the director, but he puts students in his class and he allows them to be able to take charge and be in a more professional setting and allow us to do something that we like to do which is talk about sports. So my name is Kanani and at the last game I was doing the job of the freelance videographer. The sports broadcast program here at South City is really unique I think it’s very beneficial for the students to learn skills that they could actually bring into a workplace And I think that that’s what’s so special about it. We don’t see a lot of those programs here at South City. I think the fact that the program is student-run and the broadcasts are student-run is very exciting because it means that the students have the opportunity and the freedom to Really see what they’ve been learning in action. And so they’re able to watch the show at the end and be like “I produced that” and so sometimes when it gets difficult you know, maybe a camera isn’t working or mic isn’t working students are forced to learn how to communicate professionally because It’s all for the sake of the broadcast at the end and so even though it might get difficult, it’s very important for us to learn that and that it will help us in a professional environment. I like that the sports broadcast program is a part of our video art class because it exposes you to how it really is in the broadcast world and it’s prepared me to pursue her career and broadcasting and video editing. You should join the sports broadcast program. The reasons that its because it’s fun and you get to work with new people and it might lead you to a career. Yeah, I really enjoy the program. It’s very fun. I would suggest it to anyone who wants to join. It’s a great experience. When I’m commentating, it gives a different view than an adult would and it’s a lot of fun. I think our programs prove really beneficial for some students that might not always feel like they have a place in their academic classes or maybe they don’t have an extracurricular like sports and that they see that there is the program that’s for them that maybe they feel like they don’t have a lot of skills for other things, but you can find skills here, and that will help you grow and give you a place here at our school. You feel very productive
