Shaken Fury Communications and Data

Narrator: When disasters strike, multiple
responder agencies must work together to
provide aid and response. During FEMA’s recent Shaken Fury exercise,
the Department of Homeland Security
Science and Technology Directorate provided technology and tools to make
that happen. Szczech: Shaken Fury is an important
exercise. The scenario that they’re using
with the New Madrid Seismic Zone, it brings all the players together,
whether it’s federal agencies, state
agencies, or private sector partners. so that we can validate the plans that
we’ve been working on over the years. Dossett: It is about a coordinated
effort. It’s multiple states. In CUSEC, the Central US Earthquake
Consortium, the exercise involves
eight states. that are joining together to share data,
to share situational awareness, and in this construct, it’s called the
RISP: the Regional Information
Sharing Portal. Narration: S&T had a dual focus during the
Shaken Fury exercise: search and rescue
and information sharing Langhelm: the primary information sharing
tool we’ve deployed here is the Regional
Information Sharing Portal. And essentially, that is the backbone of
all the information sharing systems that
we have. everything is tied, connected to it. we have information coming both feeding
into it as well as, uh, flowing back out
it into other applications. it’s providing information for the entire
operation center here in Kentucky as well
as other CUSEC states. EADES: every single one of these calls
that come in, they’re representing something
that’s happening in a specific location. So, we’re looking at the 24 counties in
the western part of the state, with a
focus on eight counties. And so based on the number of calls,
based on the number of reports
that we get in from that area, then we can actually
track what’s going on down there, using
that technology. DOSSETT; If you give your responders the
right technology, watch and see what
they can do. They work miracles at, out there.
You see miracles out at every disaster. ♪♪
