Read It with the Google Assistant: Listen to web pages

“Hey Google, read it”. “Okay. Today we’re announcing Read It – a new experience on Android that allows people to listen to web articles with the help of Google Assistant. It’ll be available on Android phones later this year on versions 5 and above.” We are constantly looking to ways in which we can use technology to help solve problems for people. With Read It, we’re actually addressing a fundamental problem which is access to information. Read It is a new feature that will allow people to listen to web pages using text-to-speech. It means that we can read long texts in a more natural sounding voice. We built Read It to be very easy to use. You just open a web page. It can be in Chrome, or in the Google app, or in Google News app and you say “Hey Google, read it,” and that’s it. Google will start reading out the page within a few seconds. Read It is available in 42 languages, which allows you to translate a web page into your language before you actually listen to it. So it allows users to listen to pages in a different language. And we use our translation services to translate the content into the target language. Our goal is to create a smooth, fast, and natural sounding experience. Today, text-to-speech is produced with neural nets, which is the tool that we use for machine learning to specifically create voices that are fit for long-form text-to-speech. We look at three different parameters: stress, intonation, and rhythm which we call prosody and is what makes a voice sound more natural. We’re constantly looking to remove barriers to enable people to get to the information they need, in the way they need it. So I think it’s really exciting that today with conversational A.I. technology we can get much closer to the mission by doing that. Helpful innovation is identifying those problems that people are having and using technologies to solve them. Over the years we’ve seen text-to-speech technology advancing to the level that now I’ll suddenly enjoy listening to as many pages in the same way that I would listen to a book. Where we’d like this technology to take us essentially we’d like to make every content accessible in whatever shape or form that is useful for us. It’s really about the opportunity to make information accessible to people in a natural way just by the ability to read to them.

Text to speech has been available on iOS for several years, but Google is implementing the feature with an updated interface to today's interface paradigms. Yes, we now live in a world where Google is ahead of Apple in ease of use. #VoiceFirst

Psyched for this, but I'll probably never see it until I buy a new phone, which is just a fail for Android users like me.

I've been requesting this feature for year's only I requested it inside Google Chrome. By using Google Assistant this will allow so much more applications to be read out loud.

My suggestions is please make sure you can change the color tones of the background and text colors that's being read out aloud as well as font size and brightness of the words being read out loud. (Something similar to Google Play Book's)

As well as the area's around the pause and play button to change from Dark Mode to Light Mode as well as adjust to the user's system settings if the user is using Dark Mode or not.

as a daily long form tts user on android this is great but it will need to be usable in not just google apps to be a higher quality replacement for what already exists.

The one obvious and glaring issue with the voice is that 1) it's not natural sounding and 2) it doesn't know how to properly pause between sentences or interpret punctuation…FAIL!

    Finally !
    Thanks Google.
I tend to find a bunch of articles that I want to read while driving into work – thankfully the Pocket Android app allows this, but I would prefer this being integrated with assistant.

It would be a nice idea for a phone that combines the dual display and the no notch idea,
Like imagine a phone that has both sides are full screen and all the cameras are on the raising part.
    Making both sides full screen.
I want to see a phone that has this feature

I'm sorry but dang what is taking y'all so long to add this feature…apple's had it for t least 7 years…I have a galaxy but have to carry around my iPad and can't get rid of it if I wanted to bc of that specific feature….it's so incredibly helpful and convenient as I have it read to me while I'm driving, cleaning, cooking, or just don't feel like reading…it's one of my favorite things…

So when is this going to be available again? Later this year??? Come on, more waiting!!!??? You guys are killing me! Let's do this! Get it together now google! Y'all been too busy working on features and devices that will support your awful bad habit of being nosey, and hoarding all of all of our data, and information most which is none of your damn business!

After all we know what you're really in business for and providing services to us dumbasses just isn't one of them! 🤦‍♀️ Stop being so damn nosey and hoarding all of our private information! Get to work on what matters to us, your damn consumers who make it al possible and has made y'all even richer!

Oh and google stop censoring what the hell we watch on YouTube, and messing with the search results, and trying to corrupt folks minds and influence their beliefs wit your sneaky selves…predictive search results, and by giving complete opposite results to what we requested…it appears you guys have gone backwards in proficiency and accuracy to the unsuspecting audience…but we now better!
Leave your politics where they belong in your minds, your personal discussions with those who give a damn, and at the ballot box….we don't need you making decisions for the avg folks, you are not qualified to intervene or advise the world on what's best for us normal people, from your safe big bubbles!

This feature would make a great addition to the Google Assistant SDK to speak text on a PC. My current setup is far too messy and complicated (GA SDK > push > push2run > ahk > tts). Even if this feature is limited to mobiles I'll likely use it to replace my current setup (GA SDK > push > Tasker > sync chrome > Read It > cast/stream audio to desktop). Really looking forward to the endless interaction possibilities Read It will provide.
